Good to know

  • Preschoolers usually start with capital letters, which are made of straight lines and simple curves.
  • Teach letters that share strokes together: l, t, i (straight lines), c, o, a (curves).
  • Say the letter sound while tracing to connect writing with phonics.

Questions

At what age should kids trace letters?

Many children start tracing letters around age 3 to 4 and write letters independently by 5 to 6, in kindergarten.

Uppercase or lowercase first?

Many programs start with uppercase because the letters are easier to form, then teach lowercase, which makes up most of what kids read and write.
